"Theatre will not be affected": What the free trade agreement TTIP means for the culture

New Publication: "Financial Cultures and Crisis Dynamics"

Financial Cultures and Crisis Dynamics
Edited by Bob Jessop, Brigitte Young, Christoph Scherrer

The recent financial crisis exposed both a naïve faith in mathematical models to manage risk and a crude culture of greed that embraces risk. This book explores cultures of finance in sites such as corporate governance, hedge funds, central banks, the City of London and Wall Street, and small and medium enterprises. It uses different methods to explore these cultures and their interaction with different financial orders to improve our understanding of financial crisis dynamics.

TTIP Study by Stefan Beck and Christoph Scherrer (2014)

"The currently negotiated transatlantic free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States brings risks in several respects. The welfare effects propagated  by the proponents are, even in the event of their occurrence, not significant and are also likely to be unevenly distributed."

"Free Trade Agreement Ceta confirms critics"

"The arbitrators and lawyers of the great majority of cases are recruited from only 20 large, internationally active firms," says political scientist Christoph Scherrer of the University of Kassel. With Ceta and especially TTIP, this machinery could become significantly more buoyant. According to Scherrer, arbitration has increased dramatically since the year 2000. By the end of 2012, there were 500 cases worldwide". - http://www.fr-online.de/wirtschaft/ceta-und-ttip-freihandelsabkommen-ceta-bestaetigt-kritiker,1472780,28207512.html

CHINA´S LABOR QUESTION

The Honda workers’ strike in 2010 gave high visibility to workers’ discontent and collective action in China. The strike triggered a wave of labour disputes and raises the question of changing industrial relations from below. The contributors analyze the dynamics of change and the state policies to contain the protest by suppressing independent action as well as addressing its underlying cause of inequality and bad working conditions. The state has enacted many laws aimed at channeling dissatisfaction into stable procedural mechanisms of individual grievances and employment rights. The implementation of these laws, however, lags behind as workers cannot access these rights without the right of freedom of association. The book discusses the implications of Chinese state policies that on the one hand see the need to address the extreme exploitation of workers and the unsustainable levels of inequality, but at the same time refuse to empower workers to bargain and achieve better wages and more equity.
